Father's Day Gifts With Actual Personality (Not Another Mug)

Father's Day is June 21 this year, and we are now in the home stretch where the panic shopping begins. So this post is for anyone who is staring at the same five gift suggestions in every roundup (the grill tool, the novelty sock, the personalized cutting board with three names burned into it) and thinking, surely there's another option.

There is. I have it.

This isn't going to be a list of generic "for him" suggestions. The dads, granddads, uncles, husbands, partners, and stepdads in our lives are real people with actual taste, and the best Father's Day gift is something that feels chosen for them, not pulled off the front-of-store display at Target.

Let me make the case.

What Makes a Father's Day Gift Land

The strongest gifts I've ever given have all had one thing in common: they showed I was paying attention. Not that I spent a lot. Not that the wrapping was perfect. Not that the gift was on some pre-approved "thoughtful" list. Just that I noticed something specific about the person and gave them something that fit.

For some dads, that's a tool. For others, it's a book. For a lot of the dads in my life, it turns out to be something colorful and useful that they wouldn't have picked out for themselves but love once they have it.

That's the angle I want to come in from today.

Father's Day Gift Ideas From the RJW Shop

These are real recommendations, not a top-ten roundup that I assembled with a spreadsheet. Each of these has been a Father's Day gift from a real customer in the past year that I heard about (people email me about it, I love it).

A Tote Bag in a Print He'll Actually Use

This is the strongest single recommendation on the list. A good art tote bag has become a quiet hit with dads. It's substantial enough to use every day, the prints I gravitate toward for men aren't fussy or feminine, and it works as a daily carry, a farmers market bag, a beach bag, a "I'm taking the kid to swim lessons" bag, or a "I'm carrying a six-pack to a friend's house" bag.

A friend of mine gave one to her dad two years ago and he still uses it for his weekly trip to the brewery. He calls it his beer bag. I am extremely here for it.

A Set of Linen Tea Towels

If the dad in your life cooks, hosts, grills, or has any input at all into how the kitchen looks, a set of two or three linen tea towels is one of the easiest gifts to land. They're functional. They're beautiful. They go with everything. Pair with a small bottle of nice olive oil or a hand-thrown ceramic dish you found at a local market and you have a complete kitchen gift that took twenty minutes to assemble.

A Roll (or Three) of Washi Tape

Hear me out. Washi tape might sound like a stretch for Father's Day at first, but if your dad is the kind of person who keeps a journal, organizes his garage, labels things, or writes greeting cards, it's a quietly excellent gift. I've shipped washi orders to dads who use it for marking pages in books, organizing photo albums, sealing envelopes, and one memorable customer who used it to label all the breaker switches in his electrical panel.

A pack of three coordinating rolls plus a nice pen makes a small, useful, unexpected gift. More ideas in this week's washi tape post.

A Once Again Home Co. Sponge Set

The eco-friendly sponge set from the Once Again Home Co. collab is one of those gifts that sounds underwhelming on paper and is genuinely delightful in person. They're beautiful (printed with my artwork), they last for months, they're machine washable, and they replace the gross plastic sponge that most kitchens are quietly tolerating. The full backstory on the collab is in this week's post about the collaboration.

If the dad you're shopping for is into sustainable living, has opinions about the kitchen, or just enjoys a quietly upgraded everyday object, this is a great pick.

An Art Tote Filled With Other Things

This is the move I recommend most often when someone is shopping for a dad they're not sure about. Pick up a tote in a print he'd like (Spring Glow is a good unisex starter pattern), and fill it with three or four small things that fit him: nice coffee, a book he's been talking about, a candle, a little box of really good chocolate, a pair of socks (yes, even socks are fine when they come with intention).

The bag itself is the gift, AND the wrapping, AND the structure. He uses the bag forever. The inside contents land for that moment. It's a complete, considered gift that doesn't take an hour to assemble.

How to Wrap a Father's Day Gift Like You Mean It

A small soapbox moment. You don't have to use blue paper just because it's Father's Day. The whole "men only get blue and grey wrapping paper" thing is one of the most boring conventions in retail and I'm pushing back on it every chance I get.

Use the wrapping paper you love. The Undergrowth wrapping paper is a great one for Father's Day if you want something that reads sophisticated and "for him" without being beige. Summer Bounty also works (it's cheerful, not feminine).

Tie it together with a strip of coordinating washi tape, a kraft tag, and a hand-written note. I have the full case for this in the wrapping paper post.

If You Are Reading This Late

It's June. Father's Day is the 21st. If you are reading this within seven days of the holiday, the best plays are:

  • a tote bag filled with small things you can pick up locally
  • a set of tea towels with a hand-written card
  • a small pack of washi tape and a nice pen, gift-wrapped well
  • the sponge set with a card that explains why you chose it

All of these ship fast. None of them require an explanation.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Father's Day 2026?

Father's Day in 2026 falls on Sunday, June 21. Most U.S. retailers ramp up Father's Day promotions starting the first week of June, so mid-month shopping is still well within the window for shipping in time.

What's a good Father's Day gift for a dad who has everything?

A high-quality everyday object he wouldn't pick out for himself often lands well. An art tote bag, a set of linen tea towels, or a Once Again Home Co. eco-friendly sponge set are all useful, beautiful, and unexpected. All are available in the RJW shop.

Are RJW products good gifts for men?

Yes. Several RJW products work especially well as gifts for men, including art tote bags, linen tea towels, and the Once Again Home Co. eco-friendly kitchen pieces.

How do you wrap a Father's Day gift creatively?

Skip the blue and grey conventions. Use whichever pattern you love. Undergrowth and Summer Bounty wrapping paper both work well for Father's Day, paired with a coordinating washi tape strip and a hand-written kraft tag.

Will RJW orders arrive in time for Father's Day?

Orders placed at least 5 to 7 business days before June 21 should arrive in time within the U.S. For last-minute shopping, look for in-stock items and standard shipping. Sign up for the newsletter for shipping cutoff reminders ahead of major holidays.
